That's quite a contraption, Michael. Your explanation of how the cars were emptied and sent on their way is very interesting. I'd love to see a video of that.

Just to clarify, this is the old Conrail South Philly Coal yard near the Philly Navy yard. I worked in the yard as conductor/brakeman from 1989 until it closed. During its time it was a very busy yard, with the facility always filled in the "class" tracks with lines of coal hoppers. Various crews "danced" the dance while alternating the push of ordered coal types up onto the "hill" to wait and be dropped. Its all abandoned now, the tracks are gone. On the other side of this picture is the Conrail "iron ore" dock which to my knowledge is still working.
