There used to be a railroad rule that stated tank cars must be separated from locomotives by an idler car. This train does not have one, but every photo that I have seen of Montana Rail Link's day or night gas local does carry an empty box car behind the power. I hope a professional railroader can explain how the rule applies.

I think that rule applies to tank cars containing hazardous materials.
