Is that just an oddly growing tree, or something on fire in the distance?

Wow -- from the thumbnail it looked like the engine was on fire !

It is a very large mature tree in a park down the tracks from the station. The shot is at 400mm and everything is compressed, but the tree is just a normal pine tree of some kind. Thanks for looking!

Those old EL/NJT Comet I's are making their way all over the place.

I bet this photo got so many views because from the thumbnail everyone thought that the tree was a large plume of smoke! Haha still a great photo though.

FYI, Metrolink does not use the "-3S" variant of the MP36PH. They own the "-3C" variant. The "-3S" denotes a static inverter to produce HEP while the "-3C" denotes a Cummins auxiliary generator for HEP needs. The only operation that uses the "-3S" version is Chicago's Metra.

Cool, but RP only gives you certain options from the locomotive type pull down list and I really can't remember if that was an option back in 09' when this was uploaded. Good to know though, because this unit and it's contemporaries are still running around pulling trains in the basin and Orange County.
