What happened that the engineer did not see that the switch was open?
That looks like a main line that the loco came off of.
There should have been a signal that would have indicatede that a switch was open.
No reason for this to have happened.

The switch target is yellow so it is most deffinetly not a mainline switch. If it were a mainline she would be red.

Jasper Yard is in rule 105 territory, which means that every movement should be at restricted speed meaning they should have been able to stop... however, track 1 in Jasper is considered subdivision track, and is good for 25mph. There are no signals for any switches in the yard. VIA left the switch open and should've returned it to normal, but forgot. They are taking the blame.

We can speculate as to the cause all we want but the fact is it still takes alot of effort and some distance to bring a 394,000lb locomotive to s stop. I certainly wouldn't want to be in the engineers place when explaining why he didn't stop. I am glad VIA stepped up and and admitted they left the switch open. I am really glad that no one got hurt in this.
