I like this photo, because the dangling wire from the pole reminds me of the good old days in the mid-60's before the day of microwave, when the S.P., between Stockton and Sacramento, California, had a pole line on each side of the main line, one for signal wire and the other for telephone and telegraph communications wire. We used to have trouble with organized gangs of wire thieves who worked in teams at night using pole climbers, wire cutters, and had walkie-talkie communications with lookouts in pickup trucks. They'd sell the stolen #9 bare copper wire they cut to unscrupulous scrap metal dealers they knew. One night we had several officers on patrol, driving country roads by moonlight only, when an east man (XE train) called in a pickup truck along the tracks near Galt, CA. Well, we walked in from two different directions with flashlights off, shotguns at the ready, came up on the pickup, and found two people - a pair of lovers on the ground on a blanket, doing what lovers do. I'll bet they never did that near the railroad tracks again! I'm making this one of my Favorite Photos for bringing back those fond memories (except for the memory of the awful case of poison oak I caught that night). Thank you!
