Excellent shot, Chris! I'll always remember flying through this cut when it was still under construction in the 1970s while aboard a helicopter with some Federal officials. I was just a lowly regional planner, but I lucked out and was still on board when the ARC officers on board decided to make this quick diversion from SW Virginia over to Pikeville to see "their" cut. It was impressive, of course---and your early morning shot captures the location perfectly. Until the cut-through, the Big Sandy, and the C&O curved to the left (east) through downtown Pikeville---and the river frequently flooded the community.

Even for a steam diehard, this is a rail photographer's dream shot. You picked a great time of year to be there when all the elements came together and you nailed it. Great Shot !!!

A great scene, perfectly captured. The fall colors, the waning fog, and strong contrast make this one a winner.
