I wonder if those head-end cars are for pulpwood loading? Great winter-action photo, Chuck!

Yes the white head end cars were for pulp loading, they were referred to as the Mead gons as they were primarily used at the time to move pulp from Mead Paper landings in Shingleton, Newberry, Trout Lake and Gulliver to the Mead mill in North Escanaba. Normally on a westbound they would be all loaded but on occasion the Gulliver landing would be full of cars and a few extras would be brought to Trout Lake and then would be moved on the next westbound back to be spotted at Gulliver after the loads had been pulled.
