For those unfamiliar with the model, SD40As were built forty years ago, and only for the Illinois Central, with six resold to SOO via Helm Leasing. They are basically an SD40 on an SDP45 frame, in order to accommodate larger fuel tanks. The extra carbody length results in the larger space between the dynamic brake and the radiators. The nose headlight was an IC option, and when ICG rebuilt those of the class that they retained, the dynamic brakes were removed.

Please pardon my creative math in the above comment. The IC SD40As were built in 1970, which is, of course, only thirty years ago!
