Nice to see this pair still running around. That numberboard issue seems a little dangerous.

Please explain how that would be dangerous. I didn't know there were any CNW's still around. Nice catch!

Thats a C449W by the way..
Also UP better not be thinking of switching these over.

The other 8646 is probably hanging up on the wall in some C&NW fan's train room.

How would the numberboard be dangerous? The shop probably replaced it with that one so they could have a holder until a new one is found. Either way it is nice to see those units still on the road.
|
The FRA would probably have something to say about that.

Isn't it obvious? It could result in misidentifying a train by work employees or other trains (especially at night when the hood numbers are hard to read and the numberboards are lit up) and could lead to an "incident".

I do know that Uncle Pete did say these two units would stay in All-CNW condition throughout there career's so with the 6272 in the #board, one could only think that UP is working on getting another 8646 for the engineers side of the locomotive. Great to see these two still plying the rails 16 years after the merger into the UP. Great Catch!

I'm certain David is correct. UP plans to keep these two in their CNW colors unless they suffer severe mechanical problems. I'm pretty sure they're going to get donated to IRM or another museum within five years or so.

Looking at photos of this unit in 2013, it now has both number-boards intact.
