This GP39 owes it's rather awkward look to the fact that it was originally built for Kennecot Copper (Utah,) with an extended-height cab and nose, to afford the engineer visibility over the long hood for open pit mine operations. In order to keep the extra-tall unit's dimensions to the barest minimum, the top of he cab and number board assenbly was reduced a few inches as well. When resold, the cab and nose were cut down to near-standard specifications, but the custom, extra-clearance fuel tank, applied to clear trackside rocks in the pit, remains as delivered.
