This is visual confirmation of the restrictions on the tunnels between Norton and Coeburn, and why anything with a Plate C clearance diagram or larger was banned. Amazingly, the N&W operated Y6bs through these bores (but not the Class As, like 1218---which were not permitted because of greater boiler overhang on curves). On a 1965 detour of Clinchfield trains over this line, rear view mirrors on some of their F7A units were snapped off! Subsequent detours followed the more generous clearances on the Interstate's Miller Yard line, further west.

Are these tunnel still in use? Amazing, I had to to do a double take on that one!!
