Were any of these "preserved" or, at least, not sent to the "scrapper"?

Unfortunately no examples of this unsuccessful but fascinating machine were saved. Like the PRR's Q and T class steam locomotives, this exotic example of engineering signified failure. Thus management was disinclined to have it hanging around as a reminder of misjudgment.
