The Burlington's original, 1950, Budd-built Gallery cars, the first of the design built, were like the follow-on, ACF-built, Chicago & North Western cars of the type, in that they were self-contained for air conditioning, but needed a head-end generator for lighting, and a steam generator-equipped locomotive for heat. (Both railroads hauled galleries behind steam on occasion!) On the Burlington, the commuter "scoots" and Zephyrs drew their E units from a common pool, and not until the push-pull era, pioneered by CNW, did the Q establish a separate pool of HEP locomotives for their newer, 1973, Gallery cars. The original fleet was then rebuilt to HEP-powered, push-pull standards, and the combine power cars were retired.
