This nice study highlights the unusual numberboard arrangement on GP7 114, which was a railroad modification, made because the UP, like the SP, still used train numbers, and extra designations, which had to be displayed in the indicators. The UP's GP7s were set up to operate long hood forward, so to allow the number display to be changed without climbing the ladder, the indicators were lowered. The door below the indicator was swung open, and a rack, which holds the numberals, is pulled down to facilitate the change. Number indicators on the opposite end were not modified, because those numerals could be changed from inside the short hood. However, the lowered headlight was "as built," because the original equipment had a Mars Gyralight placed above the headlight, on each end.
