Spain shows the US how its done: Separate Right-of-Way. I just wish we would do HSR right, but we're strapped for cash and to cheap to build it how we should.

Morten, This would have been paid for by British and German contributions to the E.E.C. I bet not a penny came from Spain.

European debt crisis - this is why Spain and other countries are in deep debt - spending too much on infrastructure. High speed railways are great but very expensive and, ultimately someone has to pay for it. Basically most of Europe has been spending 10 Euros for every 1 Euro they get in, sooner or later, something has to give and in time, the number of high speed lines being built will dwindle and projects will get shelved due to lack of money.

Andrew: The EEC does not exist anymore; that name and its associated organization were changed in 1993, almost 20 years ago; furthermore Spain is a net contributor of funds to the current European Union, i.e. it pays more than it receives. Last, associating the debt crisis to infrastructure building only shows a huge ignorance on the topic, but I don't think I need to expand on that as that's not the purpose of this website.
