Wow - great catch, Joe! I hadn't realized the "original" Norfolk Southern had made it into the mid-60's, or even into "color", lol. Thanks for sharing a "before" shot of this scheme and railroad.

The "original" Norfolk Southern replaced its Baldwins with low-nosed GP18s and GP38s, whose paint scheme was gray with a black roof and underframe and red chevrons on the ends. After the takeover, Southern rebuilt the EMDs with high noses, and reversed the control stands, to operate them long-hood forward, as they were assimilated into the SR roster, and Tuxedo paint. I hope that the current Norfolfk Southern seeks out photos like Joe's NS Baldwin, and Ron Flanary's, of the Interstate RS3, when it prepares it promotional material on the heritage fleet, to show the public what yesterday was like, and why it is so worthwhile to remember. Nice shot, Joe. Other than reversing the angle of the black stripes, the NS shop guys were pretty faithful to the original, as they've been with all of the heritage fleet. Very nice.

Actually the black stripes are not reversed. The Baldwin runs long hood forward so the longer black stripe is on top on the front.
