In every shot I've seen of this operation the track and grade structure looks just plain awful. How does anything stay on the track, especially hauling heavy sand loads?

The track meets or exceeds FRA excepted track standards. To be fair, there are many sections that are well ballasted with crushed pink granite and elevated curves, making it look like a Class 1 operation. The trains travel it well and you would be amazed at what a load can actually make it over. Many present day shortlines are a part of a big outfit like RailAmerica, Watco, etc. with deep pockets. However, there are still many shortline operations found around the country that work hard to keep the loads moving with less than stellar track and tight budgets. The GCSR has dedicated track workers that can be found on the line night and day hard at work.
