The fate of #s 39 & 40 was clearly inevitable, but its a shame to have lost the rather unique and "castle-like" station building.

That depot would have survived today if the city of Herington would have wanted it. They turned it down when SP offered it knowing it was on the National Register of Historic places they believed the railroad could not destroy it. Six months after SP offered it at midnight a wreck train came ito town and leveled the depot so buy morning it was a pile of stone bricks. Today the crossong nolonger is there as an over pass now occupies the place where the depot was at and the Mopac crossing is gone along with the industry sidings in town.

The first head end car out is a former troop sleeper. Also modelers of railroad equipment should note the method of chocking and blocking the combine loads.

This is such a great shot that I have to revisit it from time to time. That great building was - I believe - razed and the at-grade street crossing replaced with a bridge.

In the early 80's The ROCK sold this line to SP. I was working right here out of this depot every day with Herzog's Rail Contracting we totally rebuilt this crossing, then moved down the line out of town. Where the signals are just a little farther down was the MP line to CO. which was still active at the time. I revisted this area a few months ago It looks nothing like this the depot is gone & there is a viaduct here no crossing the yard is much wider as it is now UP property well I guess that's progress for ya.
