The class 24 owes much to American Steam Locomotive design. It is the only South African Railways class with the Berkshire wheel arrangement and has a Van Der Bilt tender with Buckeye Bogies. Of the 100 built there are two that are in regular use - one in Cape Town and one in Pretoria.
