Great picture of little known RR history. EL Es pulling freight. It happened on many roads but usually an E mixed with geeps.

A CLASSIC view you've shared with us, Kent, and thank you! I know exactly where Mr. Williamson shot this and unless one knows where the old Erie mainline passed under US-24, a person would never suspect a double track railroad once existed here. In fact, the US-24 bridges were removed and filled in with earth several years ago, which made the existence of a railroad here even more obscure. Oh, unless someone took it down, I believe the eastbound signal (right) is still standing -- although now hidden -- amongst the new growth of trees and brush. Wow, what a rush of sweet and sour memories this photo has stirred up in my mind. To clarify, the only "sour" memories I have of this once busy and proud mainline is when it became a victim of Conrail on April 1, 1976...

@Marty Bernard... It was quite common for the E-L to use 3-4 E's on freight trains regularly (at least 1970 to 1976). I saw them at Griffith Indiana all the time. @Al Kunold... Yes, The E-L E8's used on freight were re-geared. The E-L (ex ERIE) ROW from Hammond Indiana to Crown Point Indiana is now a bike trail.
