I was a welder close to the top of Mullan Pass, it was dusk with no wind and we were cutting old ribbon steel that had been replaced new steel. We knew a train was coming just like the one in this picture. We could hear it in the distance, the sound being funneled up the canyon. We saw the light enter around the curve and watched the engines smoke as they whined with the tremendous load. They were moving just a little faster than a man could walk and were throwing sand on the new rail to keep traction. The dim light of sunset made it possible to see the sand grinding the rail tops. I watched in awe, realizing I was witnessing a sight few saw. Goose bump rose on my arms and the train passed us as I counted the cars behind the engines. Soon we could hear the second set of engines screeming and smoking as the pushed and pulled the middle of the train. It was a sight I'll never forget!! Thanks for this great picture Jason, possibly my favorite. This is a picture you can look at and hear the engines!!
