What a great scene! This is likely the Cardinal as it appears there is a Slumbercoach 5 cars back. Both the Silver Meteor and Silver Star went to Amfleet II coaches in 1982. The Crescent also served Alexandria and like the Cardinal used Heritage Fleet until the late 80s. Love the Amtrak F40PHs and thanks for sharing!

In those days the Cardinal ran through the New River Gorge at night, so it would be leaving in the afternoon, as pictured here. The Cardinal of today runs on a Flip Flop of the old schedule, so as to pass through the Gorge in daylight most of the year.
