I can see a spur coming off the mainline to the right... does/did that lead to something, or did trains also used to skirt around the hill?

It may have gone to other industries in Welch or connecting to the branch line. I really don't know. Others I am sure will know the history better. Right now it just goes a little ways out of frame where it ends.

Having been raised in Appalachia, I know there are many beautiful and sunny days, but this photo really captures the gloomy side and the feeling of being closed in.
