Perhaps this is taken from the rear of the car and the crossing keeper is returning to his shack after waving the interurban through the crossing? Great photo of times gone by. John sure did get around.

Almost ghost-like in appearance. Mesmerizing photo that is difficult to turn away from.

As I helped John caption this photo, the biggest clue to confirm this location as looking north are the chimneys seen in the far distance to the right of the diamond. If you click on the map view, then over to the satellite view, you will see an industry just north and east of this spot along the canal even today that confirms it, that and the fact we know a Wabash freight is waiting the right. John says he recalls they went first, and the shanty was occupied by a operator of sorts.

Those smoke stacks visable in the distance could possibly be John Deere, but I think most likely they are at Union Carbide in Welland. Although, the one on the extreme right could also be at the Atlas Pipe plant. The GTW tracks were actually GWR,and later CN's Cayuga Subdivision. The GTW line through the area was on the north side of the peninsula in St.Catharines.
