The early 90's was prime time to be a railfan in Kentucky! Coal trains in and out every few hours.

Yes it was! The yard in Hazard and most of Eastern KY are mostly empty now. Very sad.

They had a lucrative long-term contract with KU and when the coal boom of the 80s came along KU wanted to re-negotiate with more favorable terms. Southeast said no, but lost the court case, costing them a considerable amount of revenue. That, coupled with the miners' attempts to unionize, put an end to Southeast Coal Company and about 400 jobs, primarily in Letcher County.
