I love those big ALCOs!
It was rare for MLW power to make it all the way to the west coast. They were all maintained in the east.
I believe the big Alcos were the original power on the Crowsnest Pass to Roberts Bank coal trains.
Please note that MLW power is NOT Alco as MLW was licensed to build Alco power in Canada.
I believe 4507 was the last unit delivered (10/1968) in the old colour scheme. 4500-4507 had trade-in t.m.'s from retired Train Master units.
4500-4516 and 4550-4581 were maintained at Alyth Diesel shop in Calgary for unit coal trains. They continued in use until replaced by SD40-2 5800's in Locotrol operation, delivery beginning January 1974. The MLW's were transferred to St.Luc diesel shop in Montreal. Thereafter it was rare to see MLW Alco's west of Winnipeg.
