The level of pride there is astounding! What a great subject. Somehow I just doubt that most US locomotive cabs would pass teh white glove test

@Tugboat - Japanese drivers are required to point at signals as a physical acknowledgement. White gloves make it easier for JR officials to see if their crews are obeying the rules.

If I'm not mistaken, the pocket watch is a time honored tradition in the Japanese Railroads. It's still the method of keeping time. Even the Shinkansen uses it. A railroad with class.
