1849 also from Ft. Knox is still at the Bluegrass Railway Museum. Although she hasn't run for a number of years a mechanic from RJ Corman and son have been putting in time on her trying to restore her to running condition. She was thought to have some major issues, he thinks otherwise. Time will tell but I'm hoping for the best!

There were two of these at Ft. Knox, and both Kentucky railroad museums requested them. Both museums were given one, thus neither museum had spare parts for these. The major problem with these is the Fairbanks Morse diesel engine which being opposed piston design, requires pulling the engine out of the locomotive to service the lower main bearings. Neither museum has the facilities to remove the engine, and in fact The Kentucky railroad museum has scraped their H12-44. Thus the Bluegrass Railroad Museum has the survivor of the pair.

FM is still in business. In Washington state, I believe. About 4 - 5 years ago they came down to Nevada State RR Museum in Boulder City and overhauled the prime mover in our #1855. I ran it last weekend. Runs fine. Just smokes more than an Alco!

Fairbanks Morse is still alive and building engines. They own the Alco 251 design, and still build a fair amount of the 38D8 1/8 OP engines. They are still based in beloit WI but have shops and personal in almost all 50 states.
