I wonder if this crane still exists. Probably not since it appears to be a diesel even though it is of 1946 vintage. I would think the steam powered ones would be more appealing for exhibit purposes. Having worked around modern industrial mobile cranes, the 250-ton capacity didn’t seem to me to be that big of a rating. I found an interesting UK site at: http://www.bdca.org.uk/demise.html which confirms my thoughts (but, for an entirely different reason you can read – HA!). Joe’s reference to “more economical ways of handling derailments” is also explained in the web site.

Paul, this crane was the newest and largest on the Santa Fe at 250 tons. All other Santa Fe wrecking derricks ranged from 200 tons down to 100 tons.

The people are there, probably on the shady side of the crane.
