The brass knob located below the (Sand) button is the valve which rings the bell. Looking below the Power Throttle we see the control for the sidewall heater, and just below that is the control for the exterior lights. Because the Gyralite was an add on extra cost appliance it would have had it's own control switch, mounted with in easy reach, but not normally on the control stand. Prior do the advent of Ditch Lights, L & N engine men would use the Gyralite motion switch to stop the motion yet keep the light burning. Depending on where in the lite's rotation it was stopped, they could watch either ditch line for hazards along side of the line.

That control stand is fairly standard for that era. I sometimes drive GL-22TC locomotives (built by GM Diesel in Canada) for KiwiRail in New Zealand and they are equipped with the same control panel, with only a few minor differences.

On the upper right corner of the control stand you will see 3 white switches. Just below them you will see 2 brown blanking plates. What those blanking plates are covering is where the switches for the Gyros where. One to turn them on, and one to make them move.
