What was the true purpose of the paint variation? Was it simply an experiment to see which version is better? Same as the yellow one?

I heard that they did that to some of the excess passenger units after they became a freight road only.

No doubt this was once a redbonnet... note remnants of red paint around the porthole window, above the door, and especially throughout the front louvers.

I find it kind of funny that they needed to paint an "F" on F-Units to determine which end was the "front." Really?!
