Zach, you are right that is nearing emergency proportions for rail fans, however, in order to be able to remain viable they must move up to larger power units or financially sink out of existance. That is the reason we lost steam engines and the crews that were required to operate them. Technically diesel engines only require one person to operate them, but safety requires two personel in the cab when out on the road. Personally I would give anything to see steam back in control because now-a-days coal is much cheaper than oil and our country has enough coal deposits to take care of our needs for well over a hundred years. The money we save on fuel costs would easily cover the additional personel to operate the steam engines.
