How do you get the appearance of fire & smoke coming from the stack when there is none? A little charcoal & briquet starting fluid will go a long way. Watch the following YouTube Video of how it was done last summer with 611 & 1218: http://youtu.be/IlxQs13qzB0

Great shot of 1218. I saw it on a web cam still shot and wondered what the move was about. Now I know, thank you for sharing the information and this shot. Beautiful engine.

Progress ! Media reports indicate that a NEW passenger station (designed by Virgina Tech Engineering students) will be constructed just to the west (left in photo) under the pedestrian walkway, to serve the coming return of Amtrak service to Roanoke.

Mr. Lyndall, was you there for the Link photo shoot? A friend of mine was there, and he said there was a fire in the smokestack. That would pretty much explain the smoke.

Very good Mr. No Name! It sounds like you're beginning to grasp the concept here.

Virginia Tech Engineering students? But the state could've spent so much more money had they gone with pros. Well, at least Roanoke will get a fantastic station. On a side note, NS #1218 would be much easier to move if the plumbing was restored. Just add coal. Hopefully, someone will consul #1218 and leave a bowl of ice cream by the engine when it's moved back to confinement. Nice to see folks take the time to bring her out and realize both the value and benefit of doing so.
