That was actually more common than you think. When those units were purchased, they were an A-B-B-A set that were semi- permanently coupled with a drawbar & acted as 1 locomotive because the union contracts required an engineer & fireman for every locomotive. It's after this contract was abolished that they acted as separate units. I know that the Milwaukee Road & SOO had numbering systems like that.
