I'm curious, is Borax that heavy that they need that many engines for that amount of cars, or is it that they will be picking up other freight elsewhere?

This job always has at least 3-4 units, regardless of length. The trips both ways had relatively small consists, but my guess is they don't like to break up the power. Some days they are substantially long (80-100 cars), so they oftentimes need all 4 units.

They are probably not using every single locomotive, perhaps the two trailing engins are in idle position wich means the engine is on but they dont apply any traction power.

Mark, that would explain why I see two-three six axles (Either SD40-2 or C44-9W's) hauling the NS local, when it generally only contains about 10-20 cars.
