Try getting that idea past the non-rail-interested types when discussing grade crossing and trackside safety, "But it's impossible to not hear a train coming!", umm, yes, folks, it's quite possible, been happening for over a century.

^Especially if you are upwind from the train. I've noticed that you pretty much have to be listening for a train to hear it.
