I HATE to be a kill-joy, we all know these new cars are NEEDED,but I can't help but wonder how long those automatic split-sliding doors are going to continue to work in sleet, snow, sand and general abuse.

Going retro to a Phase I stripe?
Great photo - my first view of the new baggage cars. Thanks!
Rich, I believe those doors swing into the car. AZ, those are Phase III stripes... It's great! Hopefully the whole fleet moves back to this scheme!
Rumor has it that Amtrak is indeed reverting back to Phase III overlaid with the Phase V 'Acela-style' Amtrak graphic. Officially, I dunno, but it seems to me that it'd be rather silly to order a whole fleet of brand new cars in a paint scheme that isn't to be replicated system-wide.
It's so good to see the construction of new passenger equipment in the US. I eagerly await the rest of the fleet. Railfans take note that Amtrak publicly posted the schedule of this move along with its photography guidelines. Times are changing for the better. Great picture.

This reminds me of the old express trains of pre Amtrak days. I liked them because they usually had an incredible mix of car types and road names. They sailed thru most stations without stopping. They are a much neglected subject by modelers of the period.
Awesome shot!! But, as a modeler of Amtrak, I wish they would pick a paint scheme and just stick with it!! Ugh!! But, it looks "phase-mixing" of different paint schemes is going be occurring on real trains for some some time, just like on models. When you hear about Amtrak's budget issues, it would seem that switching paint schemes so often would be expensive, as is updating model railroad colors!

Great shot. Time to get pictures of the heritage fleet before they get retired and hopefully preserved.
I love this new Amtrak cars. They are so cool!!!

Looking at photo 482622 from May 22, 2014, by John Sesonske, yes, doors are hinged to swing inwards.
"Remarks & Notes
The first Viewliner II released from CAF USA in Elmira, NY has spent the week of 5-19-2014 running tests at Rensselaer. It is seen here testing with a heritage baggage car. Note how the doors swing open. On 5-21 it tested with a horizon coach and on 5-20 it tested in between a Viewliner I sleeper and a heritage diner."

They almost look like windowless commuter cars!
