Like you, I too was impressed the first time I saw teh McGi... er, Matter livery. And, boy oh, boy, it should not ever be confused with Amtrak's "Mater" Talgo cab car, lol. Nice catch, great story - thanks for taking the time to share it!

Dennis, I can remember when the color scheme and name change came about in the 1950's, changed from "New York, New Haven and Hartford". It made an impact on me as a young boy and I was mystified as to how the name of my hometown (Hartford) railroad could be so altered. Most interesting to now know all these years later who designed that logo that we all are still familiar with. Mr. Matter left an impression on my life, one that will not fade away.
As an aside, I have searched and searched for pictures of the Hartford Railroad Station from the 1950's and earlier with zero success. It was a place that mesmerized me as a child and I loved the sounds and smells. My mother and I traveled by train in those days to NYC and to Meriden, CT to visit family. Would you have any photos of this station in your archives? With appreciation and thanks.

When I was a kid growing up in Connecticut, the New Haven Railroad was the only railroad we knew. As a little tike, I never quite understood why the TV people had to always insert that funny word "Bankrupt" in front of the railroad's name. I love the old paint scheme. It makes me feel young again whenever I see it. Hopefully, these locomotives found good homes when they were finally retired.

All six of the FL-9M's pictured sit in New Haven yard looking for homes but so far nobody has looked into acquiring them so chances are they will all end up getting scrapped. Sad as they were completely overhauled in the early 90's.
