I lived in Toccoa for a while, over on woodlawn terrace, and used to LOVE watching the Hartwell. I distinctly remember an old GP 30 high nose mechanical that they had for some time. The engine had a rather amusing habit of "slobbering" down its short nose, due to a relocated air tank up there getting condensation on it. Perhaps the most amusing thing about that locomotive, was the fact that in big white letters on either side of its fuel tank, there was painted quote "Retired! DO NOT REFUEL!" I believe the engine ended up preserved.

Reminds me of the Hampton & Branchville RR in later years. Their philosophy was that new paint didn't make 'em run better. How about we start a paint fund for the poor Hartwell?

This photo brings back a memory for me. On my first project as a field engineer on a bridge replacement project, I had my camera all ready to go for the first train to cross our new bridge. I was hoping for a new shiny Southern Belle, but instead, a rusted blue leased unit showed up! Oh well.
