I am relieved to know that no one was seriously or mortally injured in this derailment. I will also add a comment of a more "political" nature if I may. I don't know what media outlets or even which politician may mention this derailment in the coming weeks, but I'm sure someone is going to bring up the issue of "Positive Train Control" = PTC and push the agenda for implementation immediately - and therefore delay the extension that the railroads have been asking for recently. However - may I point out that from what I understand of the PTC system - it would NOT have been effective in this situation as this train was derailed from a rock slide that came down on the mainline. How is PTC going to deal with events of Nature?
