VTR has PROVEN over many years that they KNOW HOW to run a railroad. That being said, it seems to this casual observer that GP-38s & 40s would (despite their age) be much more useful locomotives for VTR's type of operations than SD-70s. Anyone have any "inside reasoning" about this change ?

Great color! Odd that the best fall foliage is at the highest elevations- usually the first to fade. I wonder if such big power is kind to such light rail.

The six axle locomotives previously used and trialed allowed a reduction of 2 to 1 per locomotive versus the four axles. Tonnage that typically required for GP40s to move over the mountain was easily accomplished with two 4300 hp 6-axle locomotives. These units will also allow the departure of all the non-Dash-2 GP40s. The VTR 301, all three GMRC GP40s - 302, 304 and 305, and VTR 312, have been sold to GMTX and are slated to leave the property in coming weeks. As for the odd foliage, it is interesting that some of us local folks have said the same thing in how odd it is this year with higher elevations staying colorful longer while lower elevations turned quickly brown and lost leaves. Every year is different and this one proved that once again!
