Considering the variety of freight cars, is it possible that was not a passenger train? Those cars would need to be equipped with steam lines, auxiliary air hoses for the conductors whistle, etc.

I looked at that too, but Roger was riding in the cab that day. I have several of his other slides from that day from in the cab at different locations. For this shot he must have gotten down to take the photo while the train was in the hole (siding).
