Great story. Did the railroad pay for the car?

The train didn't derail - I was just conveying that I sensed a very real possibility that it could happen. The experience taught a young railfan a life lesson that parking right next to the tracks is not the best idea.

With all the slow orders, it's a wonder any LV train was ever on time in the declining years. In my locale, Conrail replaced roughly 2/3 of the ties. After a while, they returned and replaced even more.
