1966 was only a year after the end of Jim Crow, pregnant women still smoked, and we lived in constant fear of Mutually Assured Destruction. How "far" we've come is only a matter of perspective. Nostalgia is a powerful drug. Anyway, I really enjoy this photo. I imagine the guys on this train had hire dates as far back as the 1940's maybe. It seemed that for decades all you saw was old men on the railroad because they would go YEARS without hiring new people. I would love to pick this oldhead engineers brain on train handling and compare the techniques he used then to what is being done today. He definitely didn't have a fuel card to worry about in 1966 ;)
