The 2 locomotives were necessary as one powered the Roanoke Rocket which still went all the way to Roanoke and the other was for the Opelika Switcher. Once the Roanoke Branch was truncated to LaFayette, one locomotive could be used for both daily jobs simply by adjusting the on duty time of the local. Great photo and memory, as usual, David!

Always groused that I came along too late and missed the passenger era in Opelika, but at least there was lots of freight action locally with the branch, Uniroyal, and rail-served textile mills. Hard to believe it's all gone.
