That's ONE way to clean out the carbon. 4-cycle diesels seem to suffer from this problem much more than 2-cycle engines.

This is a great shot, even without the "fireball". Nicely composed - love the cresting in the line, the snow and, most unusual - the location of the catch. Well done!

No that isn't normal. Reason it doesn't happen with 2 strokes is if the supercharger fails engine won't run. I think a failing turbo charger would be the cause. Diesel engines on principal work with an excess of air unless either the fuel injection system is flooding the cylinders or the forced air system is failing. This type of thing often ends with an engine fire. Does give a person to wonder about it. Great catch by the way.
