Great pic of a side of engine house work not often seen. Too bad it can't get a coat of Jenk's blue while it's in the shops, but hey at least it's a good ole workhorse standard cab EMD!

Can someone tell what the little tin can looking item is on the front stanchion is for?

Richard, I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that can is a holder for an M.U. Wire when not coupled to another locomotive. Makes for a safe and secure place to stow it away.

Richard, I found a good example for you to look at. Look for Briark, AR pictures. A shot of an SD 40-2 show the front with the cable in the holder
