My favorite place on earth back in the 70's. There was nothing like SLO for RRing....mountains one way valley the other. Freshly single again and on a bus-man's holiday ready to rock whether it be chasing trains by day or girls by night in downtown SLO(Cal Poly).....Ahhh youth....its so fleeting!

SP and ATSF offered a number of opportunities to compare the flares on the GP40X to the much more common SD45, but... I notice the two SD45s look different, and I don't think I've ever noticed that before.

Some of SP's SD45s had the standard EMD grilles, but beginning with SP 8845 the SP specified Farr air filters to be installed in the radiator intakes to reduce core damage and fan-blade erosion from sand entering this area. I believe this alternate filtering, which created a thicker-looking grille on the angled housing, is why the grilles on that third unit, 8984, is what you're seeing.
