Wondering what the gizmo on pole behind doors is. Closest thing in shape I can think of is a bench grinder and it is not likely to be one up there! Since Brooklyn ain't exactly tornado alley it's not likely a tornado siren like around here. Is a strange angle to mount a light since it would blind passing train crews, so it's not likely a light.

Most likely a siren to notify ground personnel that the railroad has been given permission to work in the area.

@FSWood: Not sure, but I'm going to go with air raid siren. The british had one that looked somewhat like that.

Considering the vast amount of military activity that occurred in this part of Brooklyn during the WWII and Korean War eras, I'd agree with kchubb that its an air-raid siren. For better or worse, there certainly was a distinct ambience to North-East railroading in the 60s & 70s. Personally I MISS it.
