The tower operator standing on the ground in front of the tower was Ferdi Armstrong....he was from around Decorah,IA.. The lead unit on #3 was the 30C or what we called the "DEATH ENGINE." 30C was the lead unit on the City of Portland when they hit a school bus on the UP and killed a number of children. After that it was involved in at least a dozen of other fatalities in its career hauling passenger trains for the Milwaukee.....don't know how it faired as the AMTK 406....hopefully a lot better.
